🧓 Willem Drees (1886–1988)
Prime Minister, social reformer and icon of reconstruction
Willem Drees was one of the most influential Dutch politicians of the twentieth century. He was born on July 5, 1886, in Amsterdam and died on May 14, 1988, in The Hague, where he spent much of his political career. His name is inextricably linked to the development of the Dutch welfare state and the reconstruction after World War II.

📜 From municipal councilor to national leader
Drees began his political career in The Hague, where he served on the city council from 1913 to 1941 and as an alderman from 1919 to 1933. During this period, he championed social services and poverty reduction, particularly during the Depression of the 1930s.
After the war he became Minister of Social Affairs (1945–1948), and then Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 1948 to 1958. Under his leadership, important steps were taken in the reconstruction of the country, the decolonization of the Dutch East Indies and the development of a social safety net for all Dutch people.
🏛️ Architect of the welfare state
Drees is often considered the founder of the Dutch welfare state. In 1947, he introduced the Emergency Old Age Pensions Act, a temporary measure that provided a basic income for the elderly. This law paved the way for the General Old Age Pensions Act (AOW) of 1956, which entitled every Dutch citizen aged 65 and over to a state pension.
His frugal lifestyle and down-to-earth attitude made him beloved by the people. The story goes that an American diplomat visiting his home was offered only a cup of tea and a biscuit—an anecdote that underscores his frugality and integrity.
🌳 Connected to the Hague and the Bomenbuurt
Although born in Amsterdam, The Hague was the city where Drees had his political roots. His years as alderman and council member laid the foundation for his later national influence. It is therefore fitting that his name is being brought back into focus in the Bomenbuurt—a neighborhood with a strong sense of history and community.
The Willem Drees Working Group aims to record history for the future by highlighting everything Drees has meant for the Netherlands.
